Lalah
A community-driven halal food discovery platform for Australia's Muslim community. Users find halal-certified restaurants via map or list, browse menus and reviews, get directions, check location-based prayer times — and submit new restaurants themselves, with every submission reviewed before publishing.
Around 40 screens designed and built in four months — app, landing page, admin panel and backend, all under one roof.

How We Started
Finding verified halal food in Australia is fragmented — scattered across blogs, word of mouth and outdated directories. No existing app combined community features, maps and prayer times in one place.
The client came to us through referral with a vision: start with Australia, expand globally. We designed and built the entire product — Flutter app, React landing page, admin panel and Node.js backend. And when the client had no domain, no business email and no cloud setup, we handled that too: lalah.au, Google Workspace and the full AWS infrastructure, configured step by step.
Research
What gap exists in the market?
Halal-conscious users relied on word of mouth, blogs and outdated directories to verify restaurants — no single trusted source existed across Australia.
What already exists?
Existing apps listed restaurants, but none combined community submissions, maps and prayer times — the pieces users actually needed together.
How do users actually behave?
Interviews showed users cross-checking multiple sources before dining out, and regularly discovering unlisted halal spots they had no way to share.
Design & UI
How is the app structured?
Discovery, verification, prayer support and navigation were mapped into one continuous journey — from search to arriving at the door.
Low-fidelity layout decisions
Core flows — search, restaurant detail, prayer times and community contribution — were wireframed and validated before any visual design began.
Why did we design it this way?
Verified badges, location-first search and one-tap navigation were prioritised to remove uncertainty at every step of the journey.
Testing & Deployment
Did real users understand it?
Test users completed full discovery-to-navigation journeys and recognised verification signals without any guidance.
What changed after feedback?
Search filters and the community contribution flow were simplified after early testing revealed friction in both.
What is live or complete?
Development is complete — around 40 screens across iOS and Android, plus landing page, admin panel and backend — built in four months and ready for launch.

Problem
The platform was structured around the real-world needs of halal-conscious communities across Australia. By connecting restaurant discovery, prayer times, navigation and community contributions into a unified experience, Lalah transforms fragmented user journeys into a single, reliable ecosystem.
Finding Trusted Halal Food
Reliable halal restaurant information was often difficult to find. Users frequently had to verify locations across multiple sources before making a confident dining decision.
Limited Travel Support
When exploring unfamiliar cities and regions across Australia, users lacked quick access to nearby halal dining options and relevant prayer schedules.
Missing Community Contributions
Travellers and local communities regularly discovered halal-friendly locations that weren't listed on existing platforms, leaving valuable information unavailable to others.
Research
We mapped the complete user journey — from searching for a halal restaurant to arriving at its door — to understand exactly where trust breaks down. The flow below shows how discovery, verification, prayer support and navigation connect into one uninterrupted experience.

Design
From early pencil sketches to high-fidelity screens, the design focused on making trust visible — clear verification signals, effortless discovery and a calm, food-first interface that stays out of the user's way.

Wireframes
Every flow started on paper — low-fidelity sketches that locked down structure and navigation before any visual design began.

Top Features
Trusted Halal Discovery
By centralizing trusted halal-friendly dining options across Australia, the platform helps users discover verified restaurants without relying on fragmented sources or uncertain recommendations. This improves visibility, reduces uncertainty and enables more confident dining decisions.

Context-Aware Prayer Support
Relevant prayer information is integrated directly into the experience, helping users plan dining activities more conveniently while exploring unfamiliar cities and regions. By connecting dining and prayer-related needs within a single journey, the platform creates a more practical and thoughtful user experience.

Intelligent Location Navigation
Discovering a restaurant is only the first step. Through location-based search, smart filtering and seamless map integration, the platform helps users quickly identify nearby halal-friendly options and navigate to them with confidence, creating a smoother end-to-end experience.

Design Details
The Lalah identity pairs a fresh lime green with deep forest tones — a palette rooted in freshness, nature and halal assurance. Urbanist, a clean geometric sans-serif, keeps dense listing screens light and legible, while high-contrast accents guide users toward key actions like directions, calling and submissions.

Challenges & Solutions
Every real project hits real walls. Here's what came up, and how we got past it.
No domain, no business email, no cloud account — there was nothing to deploy to, and the client didn't know where to start.
We went beyond the contract: purchased lalah.au, configured Google Workspace and set up the full AWS infrastructure — guiding the client through every step because it needed to get done.
Anyone can submit a restaurant — but a single wrong halal listing would break the app's entire promise to its community.
Every community submission flows through an admin review panel and is verified before publishing. The community stays involved, and the trust stays intact.
App, landing page, admin panel and backend — a complete ecosystem on a lean startup budget and timeline.
A five-person team shipped all four, with our founder personally building the Flutter app. Delivered on time.
Outcomes
Lalah was never just about helping users find halal restaurants — it was about building a trusted ecosystem where Australia's Muslim community can discover, navigate and contribute with confidence. Development is complete across iOS and Android, ready for launch.
